After 30 years of selling wholesale furniture, the economy tanked. There were no checks in the mail, as my manufacturers were all in trouble. Luckily, I was of retirement age, and retired. I had built a beautiful home in Todos Santos and was just beginning to enjoy it. We were fortunate to find a good realtor and builder. He was an American who had been in Mexico for close to 30 years. He built us a beautiful, quality home.
Now, go with me to Baja and check out the lifestyle. I realize the locals work hard for greatly reduced wages. However, when they have the basics of life; food, shelter, and most important- family, they are incredibly happy. There is no homeless. Relatives are always there to give a helping hand. They have little of the luxuries of life, but don't seem to need them- it is a different set of values. My point with all this verbiage is that life can be incredibly rewarding and simplified. I know where you can buy quality, fresh tortillas for $.45 a sizable stack. Next door is a fresh produce market where I buy vegetables for our meal- cost one dollar. First thing you learn is to trade in your US dollars for pesos asap, since the trade rate is so favorable and you never come out as well paying with dollars.
I damaged the transmission pan on our rental car and needed to go to the airport the next morning. I knew where a good mechanic lived and arrived at his house at 7:30 in the morning. After a couple quick trips he removed the pan, had it repaired and put it back on. All this cost me $25 US. We were in the car heading for the airport by 10:00 a.m.-plenty of time to get their comfortably. Life can be very simple in Baja.
