Disposing of household wastewater is not a major concern in the U.S. Either you are on a city sewage system or septic. This is not the situation in a great part of Mexico. Obviously, there are no septic fields in sand- as it won't perk. The Mexican State and Federal laws are very specific when it comes to protecting environmental impact caused by pollution. There is a growing pollution problem caused by existing septic systems, which are fouling the lakes, arroyos, aquifers and oceans. All hotels, apartments, homes, etc., that are not connected to a municipal wastewater treatment plant, must provide their own plant and meet Mexico's stringent regulations. By design, septic systems cannot meet these guidelines and are being banned in Baja, except under financial hardship conditions. Citations are being issued as violations are discovered. There is zero tolerance. Our builder was pro-active when constructing our villa. He realized a great many of our American neighbors are in violation of Mexican laws with their septic systems. There are reports of fines of at least $10,000, for each violation. The system that was installed for us was an aerobic waste treatment plant. It offers a solution that you might consider. The home "mini" aerobic waste treatment plants eliminate smells, infrastructure and high monthly maintenance fees, plus, you can recover all your household water and irrigate with it. There is an excellent tested waste water treatment system and certified by NSF International. This system has met or exceeded the NSF/ANSI Standard 40, which is the criterion that residential waste water treatment systems are tested against. It was rated Class I, the highest rating. be a common way of disposing of residential sanitary waste, they are, at best, a temporary solution and come at a high cost to public health. Children are not free to play near contaminated lakes and streams. Outbreaks of waterborne disease become common. Quality of life is eroded.
